Dr. Nicholas Avallone Named a Top Doc in New Jersey Three Years Running
Dr. Nicholas Avallone of St. Luke’s Orthopedic Care has been named an outstanding New Jersey physician for 2017 by Castle Donnelly Medical Limited. This is the third straight year he has received the honor, which is voted upon by fellow New Jersey physicians.
Dr. Avallone will be recognized in an upcoming issue of Inside New Jerseymagazine, a publication of the Newark Star-Ledger, as a “Top Doc” for orthopedic surgery. Castle Connelly surveys New Jersey physicians on a yearly basis, asking them who they would send their families to for specialty care. He was chosen under the sub-specialty of Sports Medicine under the Orthopedic Surgery specialty.
“It is certainly very humbling to know that my peers would send their families to me for their orthopedic surgery needs,” Dr. Avallone said. “I’m very happy to receive this award for the third year in a row. The first time, in 2015, it came to me out of the blue. It was quite a surprise.”
Dr. Avallone has been with St. Luke’s for five years and at the Warren Campus for 10 years. He practices at St. Luke’s Orthopedic Care, with offices in Clinton and Phillipsburg, NJ, and also at St. Luke’s Warren Campus. He specializes in arthroscopy of the shoulder and knee, rotator cuff repair/ACL reconstruction, hand, wrist, elbow and ankle ligament repairs and reverse total shoulder replacement. Dr. Avallone also serves as medical director of Sports Medicine at St. Luke’s Warren Campus.
“Our main goal as physicians is to help people, and that’s something that rewards me every day,” Dr. Avallone said. “We take some fairly complex injuries and treat them, whether it’s with physical therapy or surgery. We’re making a difference in people’s lives by giving them great care that helps them improve their function and relieve their pain.”
Board certified in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine, Dr. Avallone serves as the team physician for Phillipsburg High School, Delaware Valley Regional High School, Warren Hills High School, Belvidere High School, Warren County Technical School and Raritan Valley Community College.
“We’re delighted by the achievement,” says William G. De Long, Jr., MD, Chairman, Orthopedic Surgery & Sports Medicine, St. Luke’s University Health Network. “Dr. Avallone is an outstanding surgeon who continues to earn the respect and admiration of his fellow physicians. The recognition is well deserved.”
“It’s always great to know that others, especially among your peers, recognize you for your great work, and that’s what Dr. Avallone has accomplished in a relatively short period of time,” said Scott R. Wolfe, President, St. Luke’s Warren Campus. “St. Luke’s immediately recognized he was an excellent physician with a long period of growth ahead of him, and we basically built a practice around him, bringing on partners for him and creating state-of-the-art facilities to support his patients at the hospital. This award affirms to the community that Dr. Avallone and St. Luke’s are here to serve them.”
Dr. Avallone graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University and earned his medical degree from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He did his residency at Harvard and served as administrative chief resident at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.
He also assisted in the care of numerous professional teams and athletes including the New York Jets, New York Islanders, New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox, and tennis players at the U.S. Open during his residency and fellowship.
Dr. Avallone lives in Lebanon Township, NJ with his wife Jessica and their three children.
