St. Luke’s CEO is Featured Guest at Health Care Symposium

St. Luke’s President and CEO Richard A. Anderson and St. Luke’s Vice President and Chief Quality Officer Donna Sabol were featured guests Tuesday at a Lehigh University symposium tackling the diverse challenges facing the health care industry.

About 200 health care leaders and experts attended the 2017 Healthcare Systems Engineering Symposium, which was co-sponsored by the Lehigh Valley Business Coalition on Healthcare.

Anderson, speaking during the first of two panel discussions, addressed a range of topics, including the possible repeal of the Affordable Care Act, the need for medical tort reform and the importance of reducing costs.

The health care industry faces significant challenges today, Anderson said, but this was also the case in the past. He used a basketball analogy to describe the heroic effort demanded of a network to succeed in such an environment: He said it is like running a full-court press all day long, day after day, year after year.

Sabol participated in the symposium’s second panel discussion. Sabel noted that Truven-award-winning providers such as St. Luke’s are already “bending the cost curve” – and therefore achieving greater value.

St. Luke’s has won the coveted Truven 100 Top Hospitals Award three times in a row and five times total.

Also participating in the panel discussions were representatives from Lehigh Valley Health Network, Capital BlueCross and health care consulting firms PwC and Health Policy and Strategy Associates.
